Principles of Refrigeration – REF101


This course introduces the HVAC/R industry, safety practices and refrigeration fundamentals. Students learn to practice proper safety procedures and recognize unsafe conditions in the HVAC industry. Students will learn to identify the various types of equipment used in the industry, the types of jobs which are available upon completion of the program and the required, as well as voluntary certifications. Student will focus on the basics of the refrigeration cycle, they will be introduce to the history and theory of the refrigeration process, heat loss, heat gain, heat loads, the different types of heat and how it relates to HVAC. Students will solve simple heat load problems and will be introduced to the basic components contained in residential HVAC systems. Students are introduced to the proper use and techniques working with copper tubing and learn the different methods for joining copper via brazing and soldering techniques. Students are introduced to the proper use of oxy-acetylene and air-acetylene gas torches. Students participate in lab training and practice with air-acetylene and Oxy-Acetylene torches.



The student should:

  1. Be able to understand and practice proper general safety procedures, and identify and correct unsafe practices in the HVAC industry.

  2. Define heat gain, heat loss, as well as sensible, specific and latent heat.

  3. Define matter, states of matter and the relationship between pressure and temperature.

  4. Understand and define refrigeration, the refrigeration cycle and the various components used.

  5. Describe the types of HVAC equipment; identify the type of jobs available and the required and voluntary certifications for HVAC technicians.


Electrical Concepts for HVAC – ELE102


This course introduces the fundamentals of electricity. Students learn to identify and analyze basic series and parallel circuits using Ohm’s law and electric meters. The basic structure of atoms, the theories of resistance, capacitance, induction, and magnetism are explained. Transformers, relays, loads, switches, contactors, and control circuits are introduced. Students practice working with various electrical components within an HVACR system and learn troubleshooting techniques seen in real world situations. Students learn to read symbols used in electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, and identify ladder diagrams. This course also introduces troubleshooting basic electrical controls and electrical motor fundamentals. The student will become familiar with electrical components like, transformers, relays, loads, switches, contractors, and control circuits. Students practice wiring boards, electrical trainers, and live HVACR systems to identify the operation of their components. Electric motors, applications of motors in HVACR equipment, motor controls and troubleshooting electric motors are covered.



The student should:

  1. Be able to define voltage, current flow and resistance in order to apply Ohm’s Law formula to electrical theory.

  2. Become familiar with the use of electrical test tools.

  3. Understand and identify electrical wiring drawings (diagrams) and know the meaning of its symbols.

  4. Recognize and explain the different operations of the various automatic controls used in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

  5. Describe the application of the different automatic controls used in Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.



Air Conditioning – AC200


Student will learn methods used to find faults in air conditioning systems and will demonstrate their ability to diagnose and repair electrical faults using HVAC equipment with live faults. Students will explore the mechanical operation in an air conditioning system. Students will learn to identify and troubleshoot split system applications, and package unit applications. They will also study methods used to troubleshoot mechanical faults. Students will perform tests with measuring instruments, and learn to use calculations for finding faults in evaporators, condensers, compressors and metering devices. Additionally, students will learn how HVAC accessory components operate within a system and how to troubleshoot them.



The student should:

  1. Use testing instruments to test electrical components in an air conditioner to determine operational condition.

  2. Identify electrical faults in an air conditioner and determine the method for repair.

  3. Identify and describe the operation of mechanical components in an air conditioning system.

  4. Describe and measure the operating and target temperatures for an air conditioning system.

  5. Determine the operating and target pressures for an air conditioning system.

  6. Identify faults in an air conditioning system using testing instruments and determine the method for repair.


Heat Pumps & Electric Heat – HPE201


Students will discuss the design and sizing requirements for heat pump applications. Students will gain experience working on heat pump systems in a lab environment. Instructors will detail the appropriate time and situational uses for heat pump systems, students will be introduced for comfort and psychometrics. Students will practice understanding and troubleshooting defrost controls. Students will review HVAC applications and troubleshooting of different Heat Pump systems. Additional hand-on troubleshooting specifically on Heat Pump and dual fuel systems will be performed.

Prerequisite: REF101, ELE102, AC200



The student should:

  1. Discuss sizing and design of refrigerant heat systems

  2. Discuss typical operating conditions

  3. Discuss comfort and psychometrics

  4. Understand the operation of Dual Fuel Systems.

  5. Understand the operation of Electrical Heating coupled to a Heat Pump.


Gas Heating – GHT300


This course studies the operation of the conventional, mid efficiency and high efficiency combustion gas-fired heat systems. Topics include: safety procedures, principles of gas combustion, gas piping, venting, furnace electrical controls, gas valve operation, proper installation techniques, furnace repair and troubleshooting. Students will also be taught the sequence of operation for various combustion systems.


The student should:

  1. Be able to understand and practice proper gas fired systems safety procedures, and identify and correct unsafe situations.

  2. Define terms used to describe gas furnaces and its operation, such as AFUE, venting, standing pilot, percentage of efficiency, burners, ignition, gas valve, flame rectification, and others.

  3. Understand and describe the sequence of operation for a conventional/ Mid-efficiency, and high efficiency furnaces.

  4. Troubleshoot and repair problems in the operation of a conventional/Mid-efficiency, and high efficiency furnaces.



Sheet Metal & Duct Work – SMD304


 Students will also learn how to use different sheet metal tools to assemble and install different types of plenums, wall stacks, starting collars, takeoffs, elbows, sealing collars, registers, diffusers, and grilles



The student should:

  1. Explain the operation of the supply and return air duct systems.

  2. Install registers, diffusers, and grilles.

  3. Name and describe the use of many types of fittings.

Customer Relations – CR400


This course studies how an installer and technician can develop a good relationship with the customer. Students will discuss how to make a good first impression and handle difficult situations with an angry customer. The course will provide time to role play and prepare the student to close a service call and how to recommend and sell additional services and equipment.


The Student should:

  1. Demonstrate how to begin and end service calls.

  2. Understand why it is important to learn and use people’s names.

  3. Describe how to shake hands properly.

  4. Recognize the importance of good appearance and first impressions.

  5. List ways of showing respect for others.

  6. Develop the skills needed to deal effectively with angry customers and handle arguments properly.

  7. Understand the value of admitting when you are wrong.

  8. How and when to discuss ESA’s or peripheral sales


Ride-a-longs are an opportunity for a student who has completed all safety training and enough technical training to understand and appreciate the chance to ride with a seasoned Technician.  Those opportunities will be assigned once the instructor feels that the training would be of most benefit to the student.
